In the early days of this newspaper, there was a regular contributing column called, “What Science is Doing”. Each article highlighted one or several newly reported advances in science. The 1940s was in effect a somewhat golden age of science as researchers and scientists, focussed on the war effort, churned out advanced technologies and seized upon new discoveries at a dizzying rate. Many of the advances made during this period created a groundwork for our modern conveniences and technologies, and have extended our lifespans enough that we can continue to witness ever more marvels of science.
