“Where there is little or no public opinion, there is likely to be bad government, which sooner or later becomes autocratic government”. William Lyon Mackenzie King 1874-1950
In less than a week, on October 24 – hopefully before midnight, we will have a new municipal council. Those eligible to vote can do so now online or by telephone.
I attended the mayor’s debate in Tyrone last Thursday, hoping to get a glimpse of – and maybe hear a few words from the ‘invisible’ mayoral candidate. Nope. Putting your name on the ballot solely for name recognition for some future political scheme doesn’t work. If constituents can’t put a name or platform to a face, what’s the point? The same goes for councillor candidates who have been MIA.
This was the fourth debate, forum, candidates’ meeting – however you want to spin it, the three mayor hopefuls have attended. Each one with one goal – to get your vote. Throughout the campaign incumbent, Mayor Foster has invited voters to read his resume. He is applying for the job of mayor and we the voters have the responsibility of hiring the most qualified person for the job.
