Victorian Order of Nurses – Celebrating a History of Community Care

The Victorian Order of Nurses has provided more than a century of care to Canadians. At the end of the 19th century it was becoming clear there was a deficiency in health care and support in many areas of our burgeoning country, especially in rural or remote areas. It was during the National Council of Women, held in Halifax in 1896 that Lady Ishbel Aberdeen, wife of the Governor General was alerted to the negative impacts of the shortage of doctors, nurses and hospitals.
