The Jail Cell at the Newcastle Community Hall

In 1923, when the New-castle Community Hall was finally built, there was a jail cell and a small office for the newly appointed Village Con-stable John “Jack” Garrod. There were likely very few times when this cell was actually utilized to house a prisoner. It was used mostly for “vagrants”. Later, the closest OPP station was on Hwy 2 west of Bennett Road.
