On September 9, 1940, a few days shy of this 25th birthday, Alex ventured into the RCAF recruiting centre in Toronto, which was located on downtown Wellington St. He signed his enlistment papers, was provided with the service number J21864 and posted to Manning Depot #1, located on the CNE grounds.
