If there’s one thing I’ve learned from these past six years it’s this: sometimes all you can do is laugh, even when life seems determined to test your patience. Yes, dear readers, while we’re furiously working to ensure you get your community news, Canada Post has left us all wondering if our newspapers will arrive before the Easter Bunny does.
In the midst of all this postal pandemonium, I did what any stressed-out editor would do: I went to see a panto. More specifically, ‘Rapunzel: A Merry (Hairy) Holiday Panto’ playing now at the Capitol Theatre in Port Hope. And let me tell you, it was the best medicine for my frazzled nerves.
For those of you unfamiliar with the British tradition of panto (short for pantomime), it’s a rollicking mix of slap-stick comedy, groan-worthy puns, over-the-top costumes, and audience participation. Picture a fairy tale on a sugar high with a side of playful absurdity. The Capitol Theatre produces an original panto every year. Rapunzel did not disappoint.
