In 2016, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) was contracted by the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), a federal Crown corporation, to begin the excavation and transfer of approximately 1.3 million tonnes of historic low-level radioactive waste and “marginally contaminated soils” away from the Lake Ontario shoreline to the new Port Granby Long-Term Waste Management Facility (LTWMF), an engineered aboveground mound located about 700 metres north of the shoreline site.
