The devastating news was delivered in July, 1976 – the Orono Arena, a former drill shed located in the Agricultural Fair grounds, had been deemed unfit for public use. The Orono Times reported that the engineering firm of Leighton and Kidd, following a thorough inspection of the area’s three arenas at the request of Town Council, determined: “It is not economically or technically practical to reinforce or add additional ribs to this structure (Orono), and it would be imprudent to use the building for future occupancy.”
