In the early 1800’s the Methodist religion came to this area by ‘circuit preachers’ which were also known as ‘saddlebag preachers’. These preachers travelled by horse-back. John Ryerson (brother of Egerton Ryerson) said that he had 31 ‘appointments’ and went 12 times around the circuit attending each spot every month. He was paid $100 a year.
