Democracy in action
Visiting St. Francis of Assisi students got a firsthand look at democracy in action on Monday morning.
Theseg grade 8 students who undertook a project last fall to find ways to make their community of Newcastle a better place to live, shared their ideas with Clarington council members on Monday morning.
One of things the students wanted was a skateboard park so they didn’t have to use downtown spaces. Currently the best place to skateboard in Newcastle is at the No Frills store. Students who presented the idea of a skate park to councillors said that they are not trying to cause damage to the infrastructure at the grocery store, or trying to get in trouble, they are just trying to do their thing.
Students also suggested a tech lab would be a good addition to Newcastle and a place for kids to interact with each other and technology. For kids who do not have internet at home, a tech lab would be a great help, in addition to the free wifi offered at the library.
When the students were finished their well executed presentation, they were invited by the mayor to stay in the council chambers to see how council works.
