As part of their Annual General Meeting the Clarington Board of Trade presents Longevity Awards recognizing member businesses for five-year milestones.
This year the Orono Weekly Times is celebrating 85 years. I am very proud to be the steward of this piece of local history and continue the legacy of Roy A. Forrester who started the paper in 1937 and his son Roy C. Forrester whose name appeared on the masthead in the March 1, 1951 issue as publisher.
After Roy C. Forrester retired the paper had two other stewards before me, Troy Young purchased the paper in April 1995, then in 1997 it was acquired by Herman and Margaret Zwart. Prior to throwing her hat into municipal politics Margaret was publisher of the Times for almost two-decades.
