Region taxes up 1.9 per cent
Durham Region’s 2018 budget was adopted at last week’s council meeting. The 2018 budget recommended by regional councillors at the February 7 committee meeting was approved without change.

Family stories behind the artifacts
There are more than families tied up in Clarington Museum’s newest exhibit.
The exhibit which opened on February 8, is a spin-off from an Archive Ontario traveling exhibit called Family Ties.

Where is the benefit
Over the years, Orono has been the site of numerous film locations.
Downtown Orono was a location for the first season of the popular Wind at My Back, television mini-series. After season one was filmed in Orono in 1996, locations were recreated in a studio in Toronto, so they did not need to come back and film here. While this was before our time at the paper, it was understood the filming of the first season was a major disruption to the downtown core. Yet people speak of this time fondly when they recall the transformation of downtown Orono into fictional New Bedford where the story is set.
We can boast that Meryl Streep spent time in Orono when scenes of the 1997 movie First Do No Harm, which she starred in, were filmed here.
Christopher Plumber came to town in 2000 for the filming of Dracula 2000, for which scenes were filmed in the town hall. We were not allowed to take Plumber’s photograph for the paper, it was not allowed by his manager, as they wanted to control all the images of the actor.
