Cyril Quinney was born in 1897, on a farm proper-ty north of Bowmanville, in Clark Township. On an early June morning in 1916, at the age of 19 years, Cyril made his way into town, headed for the Canadian Army recruiting of-fice. His story is not unique. When he signed up with Bow-manville’s 235th Battalion he was just another of hundreds of young men from the Bow-manville area who had volun-teered to serve their country. Also, when he volunteered he would have known that thou-sands of young Canadians had already died and many more had been maimed in some of the most infamous battles in Canadian military history.
