Orono United Church was full of life on Saturday night. The pews were full and Jim Hayward Willowridge Bluegrass had everyone stomping their feet and singing along. This was a fundraiser for the church. Yes, the church building is up for sale – but as a congregation, Orono United Church will carry on in a new home.
In rural areas, congregations are shrinking as members age or move away. With fewer people in the pews, and less money in the coffers, rising maintenance costs on old buildings have overwhelmed many congregations.
