Celebrating Orono Town Hall’s 125th

The Orono Cornet Band played at the Orono Town Hall on Sunday afternoon. In 1899, in Orono, the band was known as the Leigh Band after its leader James Leigh, owner of the Leigh Foundry. Members of that band were: Sam Cuttell, Lewis Buckley, Andrew Knox, Andrew Stalker John Varcoe, Joseph Hall, William Barrett, Dick Martin, Alfred Garwaood, David Stevens, Jim Martin, and William Jackson. Sunday’s modern-day recreation of the Leigh Band played music of the 1890s on original instruments of the day. In the 1890s, ragtime had become popular and the band will play three of these numbers including one arranged for this concert by our music director Herbert Poole.
