While touring the Darlington Nuclear Information Centre, Michelle Malda and her grandchildren Charleigh and Marshall, test drove the electric car model race track at OPG’s Power Expo on Saturday. If you were unable to attend, the Information Centre provides a variety of interactive self-guided displays for visitors, with staff on hand to help answer any questions. There is also a world-class training facility that includes a full-scale reactor mock-up for the Darlington Refurbishment project. A viewing window to the reactor mock-up is open during the Information Centre hours of operation, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (excluding holidays) located at1855 Energy Drive, Courtice. The raffle table was jam-packed with awesome prizes at the Orono Veterinary Hospital’s 2nd Annual Bow Wow Palooza held last Saturday. Kelly Prest, receptionist, and Liz Carcone, Practice Manager were delighted at the turnout despite the unsettled weather. The event raised $1041 for Orono’s OSCAR Fund.

Last Saturday was the perfect day for ‘Buttercup Hollow’ Orono Park’s Centennial Celebrations. There was lots to do, see and explore. Clarington Library, Museum and Archives brought a lot of treasures illustrating our history. The Orono Horticultural Society, celebrating their 102nd this year, shared their history. Local vendors their offerings. A free swim and pick up baseball game was also enjoyed. Clarington Fire Services, Durham Region Police and Ambulance were present for a close up look inside vehicles and safety education. Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue along with furry friends shared what they do. Lions Dog Guides along with their handlers were busy socializing. The Newcastle Lions Club cooked over 300 hamburgers and hotdogs. Popcorn, freezies and of course birthday cake was enjoyed by everyone. Thank you to Mosque Masjid Alwadood in Orono for serving coffee, tea and the cake. For more pictures see page 4.

Oliver had a blast on Sunday at Wild Hearts Farmstead in Newtonville at their second Hooves & Hearts Event. The day was filled with family yoga, farm tours, nature art and more. Spend the day visiting their Kunekune (pronounced cooney cooney) pigs, Clydesdales, alpacas and goats.

To the community, Kevin Carr and Robynn Boissoin, send a massive thank you for your support and attending the Wyatt Carr Memorial Fundraising Event on July 22 at the Orono Fair Grounds. “Events like this cannot happen without you. Your spirit and generosity were alive and well that day. Thanks to everyone involved we were able to raise $11,022.25 all proceeds will be donated to Sick Kids.”

Would you like to join my ‘Rock Club’? Bonnie Wilson (foreground) is sharing her OZ garden and art space with women, teens and children this summer. Christine Boyd, daughters Leah, Hannah and her son Nolan joined Bonnie’s club on Sunday. Olivia is in the back painting ‘tuned bottles’ of which she has mastered playing. Bonnie can accommodate up to six adults and children for creative fun that includes painting rocks, garden ornaments, glass and other small crafty ideas. She has a good supply of paint, paper, art supplies and small rocks to start but you can bring your own rocks and items to paint. You can find Bonnie on Facebook, please message her to plan a date and time. Sunday afternoons 12-3 p.m. or Mondays 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. or 1-3 p.m. It is possible she can accommodate other days. Only on good weather days.

Dawson Brown, soon to be starting grade 4, won the ‘Design the Orono Santa Claus Parade Button’ contest that was run by the Orono Santa Claus Parade Committee at Orono Public School. Charlotte, visiting from Australia, was just in time for Canada Day celebrations in Orono. The Painted Lady butterfly she released was named Cedric 2. Cedric 1 is her stuffed panda who travels with her.
