Canadian History in the Belmont Basement

When you drive west out of Newcastle you will see the new ‘Belmont’ subdivision on the north side of King Avenue West. Incorporated into that subdivision is a large brick two- story house that is currently undergoing a massive renovation and restoration. This home was built in 1898 to replace a much earlier home that was built by Major S. S. Wilmot (1822-1899). It burned down and the new ‘Belmont’ is very similar to the original. An important Canadian historical event took place in the basement of this home.
