The bonus conundrum
At the Monday, April 11 governance committee meeting, councillor Joe Neal moved a motion to cancel staff bonuses for 2018. “I don’t favour staff salary bonuses,” Neal stated. “Everyone is getting paid a good healthy amount,” Neal stated, “To consider bonuses on top of that is not the right thing,” he said.

Let's end plastic pollution
How can the weather not be the topic of the day? Two weekends ago we were holed up in our homes as a spring storm dumped ice and snow in the area making driving treacherous, creating the need to cancel many events. One weekend later, the winter coats finally come off and we are enjoying the sun’s warmth and with it the promise of spring.
Newcastle’s spring clean-up went ahead as planned on Saturday in conjunction with Earth Day which was on Sunday, April 22 this year. There were crews all over the village and down at the lake walking with garbage bags picking up debris discarded over the winter. There was not a lot of debris in the downtown core area to be collected. It was better picking down by the lake. The count on Tuesday morning is that 800 kg of garbage has been collected in Newcastle’s clean up on Saturday, and there are more bags yet to be picked up by Clarington’s operations department. Clarington wide, 1,600 kg of garbage was collected last weekend, with more Pitch-in events yet to occur.
