Chatter has it we might be heading for an early provincial election. While we’re at it, why not toss a federal election into the mix for good measure?
Consider the American system. Love it or hate it, at least they have this nifty little rule that says a president can only serve two terms. Eight years — no exceptions. Meanwhile, here in Canada, it’s like watching a marathon where the participants refuse to ever cross the finish line.
Theoretically, someone could be prime minister for decades. Granted, the voters would have to keep putting the same person back in office, but that’s not really the point, is it? The issue is that there is no point—no final bell, no end-of-season cliffhanger. It’s more like an open-ended soap opera.
And if we zoom in a little, to our mayors, councillors, and provincial legislators, it’s much the same. The result? Communities can end up stagnating under leadership that’s, shall we say, well past its sell-by date.
