It was a beautiful day on Sunday for no tricks, just treats at the Ina Brown Parkette in Newtonville. Volunteers from the Newtonville Hall Board handed out goodies and pumpkins. At the flick of his wand Wizard Henry could turn every day into Halloween; Charlotte, a pretty, purple pumpkin; and Jaxson, who was at the ready to assist Bob the Builder were very happy with their early treats.

Stained glass lament

As I drive through the heart of our small communities, I can’t help but notice the tall steeples of century-old churches, once beacons of community, now standing like solemn sentinels over the shifting landscape. With each passing year, more and more of them are being decommissioned, sold, and repurposed. It’s the sign of the times, we’re told – shrinking congregations, aging buildings, accessibility issues. Yet, amid the practicalities of these closures, there’s something else at risk: the fate of the elaborate stained-glass windows that have adorned these sacred spaces for over a century.

What happens to these windows when the doors close for good?

Honouring a century of service, the local legacy of the RCAF

April 1, 2024 marked the centennial of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Canada at that time already had an exceptional reputation, with many Canadians serving within Britain’s Royal Flying Corps during the First World War. More than 800 military decorations were given to Canadian pilots, including three Victoria Cross medals awarded to Captain Billy Bishop, Flight Lieutenant Alan McLeod, and Captain William Barker.
