It was an early start for the cyclists who tackled the 56km on Sunday at the first annual Hike or Bike fundraiser for Clarington Hospice. At the end of the day the total amount raised was $134,379.75. The community showed up big time. Signed up for the event were 107 hikers/runners and 39 bikers. Clarington Hospice was recently renamed Marigold Hospice Care. The groundbreaking ceremony is taking place on October 13 at 10 a.m at the site on Cobbledick Road.

A special place

Ten years. It’s been a long haul. With the ground breaking ceremony fast approaching a hospice in Clarington is now within our reach. For those who still might not think a residential hospice is important, you never know if or when you will need one.

Hospice holds a special place in my heart. In 2005 I worked for Durham Hospice, shortly after it was rebranded to Hospice Durham when it amalgamated with North Durham Hospice. At that time hospice was a volunteer home visiting program providing care and support. Programs offered through hospice helped people remain in control and die at home. The goal of hospice then and today, is to improve a person’s quality of life during their last months. Hospice focuses on comfort care, control of pain, and symptom management.

It was amazing to be a part of this organization. My title was Promotion and Awareness Coordinator.

It’s the Burley Banners

Three handsome and courageous brothers from the small village of Newtonville didn’t hesitate for a second to step up for their country in World War II. We are talking about the Burley brothers: Ron, Harold and Keith. Their efforts are now honoured/being championed by a set of banners festooning a pole on the north-west corner of Newtonville Road and Hill Street.

Our Draft Strategic Plan

The Municipality of Clarington is requesting your input to the Draft Strategic Plan. The current draft strategic plan is like a road map, available online. All comments and input will be gathered, reviewed, and incorporated into the plan presented to council in November for their approval. Four in person sessions have been held. An online survey is also available.
