Durham Region Ukraine Assistance Group making a difference in lives of newcomers

Eleven months ago, February 24, 2022, the Russians invaded Ukraine. The ensuing reluctant exodus of citizens of Ukraine began. Many fled by whatever means they could to border countries, where they sought refuge in nations throughout the world. Many families came to Canada, some arrived in Durham Region, with nothing but what they could carry.

It was an All-Star Classic in Orono last weekend. Top players from the Victoria – Durham U18 League played in an East vs West showcase at the Orono Arena on Saturday. Team East made a spirited at-tempt at a late game comeback but ultimately the West prevailed. Pictured is East forward Nicholas Dobbs (#5) from the Newcastle Stars bearing down on the West goalie. After a series of dekes and feints, Dobbs scored. A complete event recap is found inside in the newspaper on page 8.

Farmland at risk

The impacts of Bill 23: Build Homes Faster Act keep rolling in. Last Thursday the Ontario Federation of Agriculture hosted a webinar Homegrown: the Impacts of Bill 23 on Agriculture across Ontario. This intrigued me as most of the chatter has been on the bill’s impact to the Greenbelt and the impact the reduction of development charges will have on municipalities.

No one will argue that farmland is an essential resource for the sustainability and security of our food systems, environments and our economy. But all this depends on the avail-ability and the quality of farmland that is available. Farmland continues to be at risk with increasing pressure to develop for housing.
