A reminder to keep your garbage out of the metal recycle bins

One of the Newcastle Lions’ fundraising efforts is the metal scrap bins located at Rona Hardware in Newcastle. They have been doing this since 2013, however due to the thoughtlessness of some residents it may be in jeopardy.

Emily Hayes, a student of Alexa Goldie, performed an original song titled: “Erase Your Face” at Alexa’s Music Program’s Summer Recital held on Monday, July 22 at the Newcastle Community Hall. Seventeen of Alexa’s students played at the recital.


Orono is the place to be for antiques on August 10th

On Saturday, August 10, the 12th Annual Orono Antique Street Festival will be held on Main Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. – rain or shine. Residents and visitors will be treated to a great selection of antiques, collectables, vintage furniture and finds, toys, books, jewellery, art and so much more in this one-day event.


Extinction? Say it ain’t so…

I came across something interesting the other day. And yes, it was on the internet. It was posted in 2014 “When Will Newspapers Become Extinct?” Curious, I couldn’t resist the click.

That prediction comes from The Future Exploration Network’s research on the future of media. According to the research, newspapers as we know them will be extinct across the entire globe by 2040. By 2025, they predict newspapers will be extinct in nearly 20 countries around the world:

2017: United States
2019: United Kingdom and Iceland
2020: Canada and Norway
2021: Finland, Singapore, and Greenland
2022: Australia and Hong Kong
2023: Denmark
2024: New Zealand, Spain, Czech, and Taiwan
2025: Poland, Sweden, and Switzerland


Lee Meat Farms – All Natural, No Stress

Scott Lee was an art teacher in Scarborough when his principal walked into the staff room one day and asked “Do you want to buy a farm?” Lee relates. At first, the School Board was interested in purchasing the acreage, but in the meantime Scott and Carole had visited it and put down money. “The rest is history,” comments Lee. That was in 1977. In 1995 both retired to the 80-acre farm full time


Offering a ‘helping hand’

The Helping Hand Organization held a Lemonade Stand fundraiser at the Courtice Flea Market on Sunday, July 21. Pictured (LtoR) Nency, Ishani and Pritesh Thakka. Funds raised through the event will be used for children’s education. Helping Hand Organization helps parents in Clarington with the costs of hiring a tutor.


Newcastle is bursting with new talent

On Monday, July 22, 17 very talented young ladies filled the Newcastle Community Centre with music. It was the summer recital of Alexa Goldie’s Music Program, in Newcastle.
