The comment was made by organizers of the Orono Remembrance Day service held on Sunday, that attendance was down because of the rain.
It was raining a bit for most of the day on Sunday, with a slightly heavier downpour for a few minutes during the service at the Orono Cenotaph which began around 1:30 p.m.
We are called to the act of remembering on November 11, so those who gave their lives for our country and our freedom are never forgotten. November 11 being the day in 1918 that World War One ended.
The numbers of Canadian soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifice is staggering. According to figures posted by the Canadian War Museum, close to 61,000 Canadians died in World War One, between July 28, 1914, and November 11, 1918. An additional 1,305 soldiers from Newfoundland, which was not part of Canada yet, lost their lives in this conflict. Those are staggering numbers. When numbers get too big for us to recount with ease, they are often rounded off. It is unfortunate the exact number of those who signed up , never to return home are not the numbers used when referencing the war death. Is it fair to those individuals who died fighting for their country, to not count them among the dead?
