Ice maintenance is serious business
Larry Dickinson had no idea how much work went into keeping a sheet of ice in top condition when he began his job as arena operator four weeks ago.
It is mid November and already we have had a small taste of winter. The little bit of snow that fell last week melted quickly, and temperatures have warmed up slightly again.
With the end of daylight savings time we have entered a period of diminished light. Combined with the grey steely skies of November, we are reminded that the long cold winter is fast approaching. The early darkness accentuates the warm glow of lights coming through the windows of our homes. It is easy to imagine families sitting around the kitchen table enjoying comfort food and each other when walking by the lit windows. More often than not though, the families are dispersed through the house engaged with their communications devices , in some virtual conversation involving a screen.
The next few weeks will be busy ones in our communities in the lead up to Christmas. Various groups within our village will be holding their bazaars, concerts, dinners and get-togethers in the next few weeks at the various venues throughout town. The great hoorah before we all hole up in our homes to ride out the cold winter. These events offer great opportunities for us to invite our neighbours to participate in the social activity of the village.
